OVATION VOTER RECRUITMENT Ovation voters serve on one-year terms, from September 1 to August 31 each year. The Ovation Review Committee recruits voters in May, June and July through an extensive evaluation process. Voters are approved by late July, and attend mandatory training sessions in August before being activated to vote in the Ovation Awards system beginning on September 1. Ovation Voter Recruitment for 2010/2011 has begun! To apply to be an Ovation Voter, please download the application and submit it to LA Stage Alliance by FRIDAY, JUNE 18, 2010 2010/2011 Ovation Voter Application Ovation Voter Recruitment occurs in three phases, beginning in May and ending in late July each season. PHASE ONE: INVITATIONS TO ARTISTIC DIRECTORS AND MID-TERM VOTERS Per the policies of the Ovation Review Committee, any artistic director of a LA Stage Alliance member theatre, where that theatre has been in existence for at least three years and has produced at least three full productions in the last three years, is automatically invited to become an Ovation voter. These Artistic Director voters do not have to fill out a written application or interview with the Ovation Review Committee, and are only asked to commit to vote on a minimum of 10 productions during their one year term (there is no maximum), instead of the 25 that all other voters are asked to commit to seeing. Invitational emails to these artistic directors and companies are sent in the middle of May by LA Stage Alliance staff. Artistic directors who wish to become (or remain) voters for 2010/2011 must confirm by end of July. If you are an artistic director who should be eligible, but who has not been contacted, please email Ovations@LAStageAlliance.com If an organization would qualify to have an artistic director voter, but doesn't have a person designated as an artistic director, then a representative of the organization can recommend up to two voters to be considered in Phase Two by emailing their names and email addresses to Ovations@LAStageAlliance.com In addition, non-artistic director voters are selected to serve an initial one-year term, and then if approved a second time, serve two year terms after that, provided that they meet all voter requirements each season. As part of Phase One, any voters who are in the middle of a two-year term are asked if they wish to continue as voters for the next season, and those that do are added to the roster without having to apply for that year. For the 2009/2010 season, 98 voters (out of 255) are Artistic Directors or members of the Ovation Review Committee. PHASE TWO: RECOMMENDED OR RETURNING VOTER APPLICANTS During Phase One, all artistic directors of LA Stage companies, whether they personally decide to be a voter or not, are asked to recommend one or two other artists as prospective voters, who are invited to submit applications in Phase Two. LA Stage staff contact these 'recommended' voters with a special application via email, which the applicants must submit to LA Stage Alliance to be considered as voters. In addition, current Ovation voters who are not artistic directors, and who are not in the middle of a two year term are included in this phase. All current Ovation Voters are contacted with a 'renewal' application in early May. If you are a returning voter, and you have not received a renewal email and application by May 15, please email Ovations@LAStageAlliance.com In the 2009/2010 season, 130 of the approved voters (out of 255) were Recommended or Renewing Applicants, considered in Phase Two. PHASE THREE: SELF-SUBMITTED NEW VOTER APPLICANTS The final stage of voter recruitment is the evaluation of applicants who submit themselves for consideration to join the Ovation voter pool. There are no restrictions to who can apply to be an Ovation voter. These applicants should download the following pdf application and submit it to LA Stage Alliance by Friday, June 18, 2009. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE VOTER APPLICATION All information on eligibility and voter responsibilities is contained in the application. If you have trouble downloading the pdf, email Ovations@LAStageAlliance.com or call 213.614.0556 x 12. In the 2009/2010 season, 37 of the approved voters (out of 255) were Self-Submitted Applicants, considered in Phase Three. VOTER APPLICATION EVALUATION PROCESS Voter applications include a resume listing all professional theatre credits, several short-answer questions regarding the applicants reasons for wanting to become an Ovation voter, and their usual theatre-going habits in Los Angeles. In addition, each applicant writes an essay about a production they have seen in Los Angeles in the previous year, analyzing that production in all elements of production, performance and design. This essay is paired with a scoring sheet, just like the ballots that voters use to score productions. Once all applications have been submitted, the Ovation Review Committee members independently score each written application. Their scores are aggregated, and the applicants split into three groups: the highest-scoring, who are approved as voters immediately, the mid-scoring, who are called in for a ten-minute interview with members of the Committee, and the low-scoring, who are not offered a position as a voter for the upcoming season. Voters called in to interview meet with a selection of members of the Committee, and receive additional interview scores, which are combined with their written application scores to further subdivide this set of applicants into accepted voters and applicants who are not accepted for the upcoming season. An applicants past history of applications are not considered in the application process, so being turned down for a voter position in one season will have no bearing on future applications. If renewing voter applicants have had a particularly high number of cancellations in the previous season, or have not met their voting minimum, they may be required to take a year off from voting before re-applying for a voter position. |
